Wat Gedachten over het "Personeelstekort"/Some thoughts about "staff shortage" NL/ENG

Er waart een spook door Nederland, het spook van antiwerk. 

Er is de afgelopen tijd veel gesproken in de media over het zogenaamde personeelstekort. Bedrijven door het hele land heen zouden moeite hebben met het vinden van personeel en met elkaar hiervoor concurreren. Er worden hier verschillende redenen voor gegeven: Economische groei, de coronacrisis, de steun vanuit de overheid vanwege deze crisis, vergrijzing etc.(1). Natuurlijk zijn er als reacties op deze crisis zat kapitalisten die vinden dat mensen gewoon harder moeten werken(2). De regering is als reactie hierop met een plan gekomen wat erop neerkomt dat mensen die parttime werken gewoon extra uren moeten draaien en mensen die tegen de pensioenleeftijd aanzitten langer te laten werken(3). Over het verhogen van het minimumloon of het verbeteren van de arbeidsomstandigheden is geen woord gerept...

Ik denk dat elke zelf respecterende klassenbewust persoon wel realiseert dat dit nutteloze acties zijn. Dit zijn de acties van een liberale samenleving die elk perspectief wat betreft het verbeteren van de materiële condities van de mens verloren heeft en dus hun zogenaamde "progressieve" perspectief opoffert voor de kapitalistische markt, iets wat keer op keer gebeurt. We zagen het tijdens de coronacrisis(met het openhouden van de economie en het nutteloze opofferen van mensen ter behoefte voor het bedrijfsleven) en we zien het nu in onze huidige instabiele tijd met deze acties. Er is echter meer aan de hand dan alleen een pandemie en een destructieve oorlog in Europa. Er waart een sfeer door de westerse wereld, een sfeer die begon in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika en zichzelf verspreid over Europa en hopelijk ook de rest van de wereld.

Het afgelopen jaar is er een golf ontstaan van vakbondsvorming in de VS. Meer en meer locaties van grote Amerikaanse bedrijven(Starbucks, Amazon, etc.) zien steeds meer werknemers het initiatief nemen om een vakbond te vormen(4). Dit heeft ook geleidt tot steeds meer stakingen bij grote Amerikaanse bedrijven, bijvoorbeeld bij ontbijtgranen fabrikant Kellogg's(5). Door onder andere de coronacrisis, het wanbeleid van de Amerikaanse federale overheid en het jarenlange wanbeleid van veel Amerikaanse staten zijn steeds meer en meer mensen echt bewust geworden dat de kapitalistische relatie tussen grote werkgever en werknemer steeds oneerlijker is en het huidige systeem niet werkt. Dit heeft onder andere ook geleidt tot het nieuw leven inblazen van de "anti-work" beweging.

Antiwerk is niet een nieuw concept. Het heeft z'n wortels in Socialistische en Anarchistische bewegingen maar het is vooral de afgelopen 2 jaar dat het echt weer relevant is geworden in onze huidige maatschappij(6). Een goed voorbeeld hiervan is de r/antiwork subreddit. Deze subreddit is in een korte anderhalf jaar gegroeid van 100.000 volgers naar 1.7 miljoen. Dit laat duidelijk zien dat er een groeiend aantal mensen is die hunzelf afvragen wat het nut is van werken in een kapitalistische uitbuitende maatschappij. Dit is de kern van antiwerk. Men stelt de vraag in hoeverre het werken voor winstbejag van bedrijven en de heersende klasse echt nodig is. Het antwoord hierop is duidelijk, het is niet nodig en het feit dat de maatschappij ons forceert om onze arbeid te verkopen voor een fractie van wat het waard is, is desastreus voor zowel het individu en de mensheid in het algemeen(7).      

Deze retoriek begint ook steeds meer te verspreiden in Nederland, zie de huidige stakingen op Schiphol(8) of het personeelstekort bij de NS(9). Wat interessant is bij deze acties in Nederland is dat deze niet vanuit de Nederlandse vakbonden zoals het FNV or CNV kwam. Deze acties stonden buiten deze vakbonden federaties die al jaren hun revolutionaire of syndicalistische trekken verloren hebben. Dit laat aan mij duidelijk zien dat wij hier een zeldzame mogelijkheid hebben. Het is voor het eerst in tientallen jaren dat er sterke arbeidersbeweging wordt opgebouwd en wij kunnen hier gebruik van maken om maatschappelijke veranderingen door te voeren die verder gaan dan het simpele compromis sluiten wat de staat gedogen vakbonden jarenlang gevoerd hebben. De reactie vanuit de parlementaire politiek op deze stand van zaken laat duidelijk zien dat zij niet bereid zijn om zonder slag of stoot de positie van de arbeider te verbeteren en dus moeten wij de retoriek van antiwerk samenvoegen met het huidige momentum van stakingen om de staat en het kapitaal te dwingen zichzelf in de vuilnisbak van de geschiedenis te delegeren. De wil is er, wat mist is het revolutionaire inzicht om dit te doen.

Dit is waar lokale Socialistische en Anarchistische organisaties kunnen helpen. Door het onderwijzen van de gemiddelde persoon met het retoriek van antiwerk op een manier die iedereen begrijpt is het mogelijk om deze golf van stakingen en vakbondsvorming het revolutionaire karakter te geven die nodig is. Dit is niet makkelijk en we hebben nog een lange weg te gaan. Vergeet niet dat in het verleden de heersende klasse erin geslaagd is om arbeidersbewegingen een halt toe te roepen door vakbonden te co-opteren en hun te verminderen tot poetsveeg van de staat. Ik acht de kans dat deze beweging het momentum krijgt om het apparaat van kapitaal te vernietigen en verplaatsen met niet hiërarchische alternatieven, vrij klein. Echter het feit dat deze beweging überhaupt is ontstaan laat zien dat er een kans is en het zou een groot zonde zijn om deze kans aan ons voorbij te laten gaan. Een betere wereld is mogelijk, maar wij moeten het met z'n allen maken.

A ghost is haunting the Netherlands, the ghost of anti-work. 

Recently there has been a lot of talk in the media about these so called staff shortages. Companies throughout the entire country would apparently have issues finding new staff and would compete with each other for this. There have been several reasons that have been given for this: Economic growth, the corona pandemic, governmental support given to companies because of said pandemic, an aging workforce, etc.(1). Of course as a response to this are there a lot of capitalists who claim that people should just work more(2). The government as a response came with a plan that boils down to letting parttime workers work more hours and letting retirement age workers work longer(3). Not a single word has been said about rising the minimum wage or improving worker conditions...

I think that every self respecting class conscious person realizes that these are pointless actions. These are the actions of a liberal society that has lost all perspective of improving the material conditions of people and therefore sacrifices their so called "progressive" policies for the capitalist market, something that happens time and time again. We saw it during the pandemic(by keeping the economy open and sacrificing human lives to the benefit of business) and we see now it with these actions in our current instable world. There is however more going on then just a pandemic and a destructive war in Europe. An atmosphere is lingering throughout the western world, an atmosphere that started in the United States of America and is now spreading itself throughout Europe and hopefully the rest of the world. 

Last year a wave of unionization erupted in the US. More and more locations of large American companies(Starbucks, Amazon, etc.) saw workers take the initiative to form a union(4). This also lead to an increase in strikes at large US companies, for example at the cereal company Kellogg's(5). Among other things the Corona pandemic, the awful mismanagement of the US federal government and the decades long mismanagement of US state governments has lead to more people realizing that the capitalist relationship between employer and employee has become increasingly unequal and that the current system does not work. All of this has also lead to a new life into the "anti-work" movement. 

Anti-work is not a new concept. It has it's roots in Socialist and Anarchist movements but it has especially become relevant these last 2 years in our current society(6). A good example of this is the r/antiwork subreddit. This subreddit has grown from about 100.000 to 1.7 million followers in the span of about 1.5 years. This shows clearly that there is a growing amount of people in society that are wondering what the point is of working in an exploitative capitalist society. This is the core of anti-work. People are asking themselves the question how much working just for the profits of businesses and the ruling class is really necessary.  The answer to this is clear, it is not necessary and the fact that society forces us to sell our labor for a fraction of what is worth is disastrous for both the individual and humanity in general(7). 

This rhetoric is also starting to spread in the Netherlands, just look at the current strikes on Schiphol Airport(8) or the staff shortages at the Dutch Railways(9). What's interesting is that these actions in the Netherlands did not come from the Dutch labor unions like FNV or CNV. These actions were made outside of these union federations that have long lost their revolutionary or syndicalistic traits. This shows clearly to me that we have a rare opportunity here. It is first the time in decades that we are building a strong labor movement and we can use this to push through societal changes that go way beyond the simple compromises made by the state sanctioned labor unions which has sapped the strength of the labor movement for years. The response from parliamentary politics to this state of affairs has shown that they are not willing to improve the conditions of the worker without a fight and therefore we have to merge the rhetoric of anti-work with the current momentum of strikes to force the state and capital to delegate themselves into the garbage bin of history. The will is there, all that is lacking of the revolutionary insight to do it. 

This is where local grassroots Socialist and Anarchist organizations can help. By educating the average person with the rhetoric of anti-work in a way that everyone understands, the possibility opens up to give this wave of strikes and unionization the revolutionary character that is needed. This is not easy and we still have a long way to go. Don't forget that in the past the ruling class managed to subdue the labor movement by co-opting labor unions and reduce them to bootlickers of the state. I consider our chances of succes in regards to smashing the apparatus of capital and replacing it with a non hierarchical alternatives to be relatively small. However the fact that this movement emerged in the first place shows to us that there is a chance and it would be a waste to let it get passed us. A better world is possible but we have to do it together.
